State Census
Don't forget to check your GenWeb
County Page if a state census existed in case someone has transcribed
and donated your county. Also search Google
or other search engines for the census you are after in case someone
has transcribed it and made it readily available.
- Alabama - state census taken in 1855 & 1866.

- Alaska - Ancestry does have an index to Alaska
census 1870-1907 if you are a member or visit your local family
history library.
- Arizona - territorial censuses available for 1864,
1866, 1867, and 1869. The FamilySearch
Research Outline for Arizona gives an overview. Ancestry does
have an index to the Iowa the index to the 1864 territorial census
if you are a member or visit your local family history library it
may be searched here.
- Arkansas
- California - state census for 1852. The
FamilySearch Research Outline for California gives an overview
- Colorado - territorial census taken in 1861, 1866,
1867, 1873 and 1885. An overview of Colorado census is in the FamilySearch
Research Outline for Colorado. The University of Northern Colorad
has a nice overview
of census they own that gives added information.
- Connecticut - a 1670 census of Connecticut was
taken and has been published in book form - Jay Mack Holbrook is the
author. It does not appear to have been filmed.
- Delaware - 1693 special index of Swedes in the
middle colonies was taken. In 1782 a state census of Delaware was

- District of Columbia - some district census were
taken for various years as early as 1803. The FamilySearch

- Florida - many colonial, territorial and state
census from 1783 onward. The FamilySearch

- Georgia - various state census from 1786 to 1890.

- Hawaii - various colonial census and territorial
census. The FamilySearch

- Idaho - in 1850 included in Oregon Territorial
census. In 1860 included in Washington Territory census. The FamilySearch
Research Outline for Idaho has an overview. The Genweb census
project for Idaho
includes maps that show where early residents were enumerated prior
to actual Idaho census
- Illinois - territorial and state census were taken
in 1810, 1818, 1820, 1825, 1830, 1835, 1840, 1845 and 1855 & 1865.
1807 Illinois included in Indiana state census. FamilySearch
Research Outline for Illinois has an overview as well. The
Illinois State Archives also has information about state census.

- Indiana - 1807 census of Indiana Territory. 1810
census for Harrison Co. IN (the rest was lost). FamilySearch
Research Outline for Indiana has an overview
- Iowa - various early state census for a number
of counties (in the 1840s). 1854 state census to head of households
also gave the number of males and females. An overview of all years
for what counties may be found on the FamilySearch
Research Outline for Iowa. Ancestry does have an index to the
Iowa 1885
and 1895
state census if you are a member or visit your local family history
library.
- Kansas - state census for 1855, 1865, 1875, 1885,
1895, 1905, 1915, 1925 but for the most part they only give head of
household and number of family members. FamilySearch
Research Outline for Kansas has an overview. The Kansas
State Historical Society is working to put up an index to their
1895 census. Territorial Kansas Online is working on scanned images
of Kansas
territorial census. An 1855
index of Kansas Voters may be found at the Troubles in Kansas
website
- Kentucky - no state census for Kentucky but Kentucky
tax lists have been well filmed and are available through the family
history library by doing a county search and finding the heading under
that county of taxation. (ie go to the Family
History Library Catalog, choose "Place Search" put in
your county under "Place" and Kentucky as "Part of"
and your county will come - scan down to find the heading "taxation"
. The tax lists do only show the tithables but they also tell you
if they owned land, how much and where it was situated in most cases.
- Louisiana - various colonial census and a special
census of New Orleans taken in 1805. FamilySearch
Research Outline for Louisiana has an overview.
- Maine - state census of 1837 for some areas. An
overview of Maine census may be found in the FamilySearch
Research Guide to Maine
- Maryland - colonial census taken in 1776 for most
counties. Also in 1778 the Oaths of Allegience were gathered. FamilySearch
Research Outline for Maryland has an overview. Some colonial census
can be searched at the Maryland
State Archives site.
- Massachusetts - census taken 1855 and 1865. Overview
of Massachusetts census can be found in the FamilySearch
Research Outline for Massachusetts as well as some added help
from their taxation
section.
- Michigan - numerous early territorial census.
The FamilySearch Research Outline for Michgan has an overview.
- Minnesota - In 1820 it was included in the Michigan
census. In 1836 & 1838 included in the Wisconsin territorial census
as part of Crawford & Dubuque Counties (Dubuque later being Iowa
Territory). In 1849 it became its own territory. Census taken 1849,
1850, 1853, 1855, 1857

Park Genealogical Books has an annotated version of the
Minnesota 1849 Territorial Census.
- Mississippi - various early state and territorial
census between 1792-1866.
The FamilySearch Research Outline for Mississippi has an overview.
- Missouri - some early Spanish census as early as
1772. Some part of Missouri found in the 1810 census of Louisiana
Territory. Missouri territory census 1814, 1817, 1819, 1820. Many
of these were lost.

- Montana - Montana never took a state census. The
Montana Historical Society has a nice list of resources that have
some alternative sources like school
records.
- Nebraska - special census of 1885 plus a variety
of territorial / state census from 1854-1869. The
FamilySearch Research Outline for Nebraska gives an overview
- Nevada - 1862 territorial census. The
FamilySearch Research Outline for Nevada has an overview
- New Hampshire - colonial census were taken for
1767 and 1775. The link to the FamilySearch Research Outline for New
Hampshire doesn't work, however they do show an entry for the
film in their catalog
- New Jersey - no specific state census but excellent
tax
assessments were levied in colonial times are are filmed and available
through the family history library
- New Mexico - The Spanish and Mexican census exist
for various years from 1750-1845. Though they are incomplete they
include the maiden names of married women. The
FamilySearch Research Outline for New Mexico has an overview
- New York - state census every 10 years from 1825
to 1875. Also some colonial census. From 1855 on every person recorded
in household. A nice guide to using these records may be found on
the Monroe
Co. NY Genweb Page as well as an overview in the FamilySearch

- North Carolina - state census were taken 1784-1787
(head of household, residence and age of family members. This may
be found in book form at the Wenatchee Area Genealogical Society Library.

- North Dakota - North Dakota was included in the
1836 Wisconsin census, the 1840 census of Iowa, the 1850 census of
Minnesota and after from 1860-1880 called simply the Dakota Territorial
censuses.. The FamilySearch

- Ohio
- Oklahoma In 1860 Oklahoma was included inthe census
of Arkansas which included what was then Indian Territory. An 1890
census of Oklahoma Territory was taken and has been filmed. FamilySearch
Research Outline to Oklahoma gives an overview. The Oklahoma Historical
Society has put up an index to the 1890

- Oregon - territorial schedules for 1842-1859 -
in most cases only head of household is shown. FamilySearch
Research Outline to Oregon gives an overview. Some early Oregon
Territory censuses may be found online at oregongenealogy.com.

State Archives has many entries from early territorial census.
- Pennsylvania - manufacturers schedules for 1850-1880
- contains names of owners and details about their business. The FamilySearch
Research Outline to Pennsylvania gives an overview. They also
have a section on
taxation that is very helpful.
- Rhode Island - colonial census for 1747 to 1754,
1774, and 1782 as well as state census at 10 year intervals from 1865-1936.

- South Carolina - No colonial census has survived.
The FamilySearch
Research Outline to South Carolina gives an overview and its taxation
section is also helpful.
- South Dakota - in 1836 it was included in the Wisconsin
census, 1840 in the Iowa census, 1850 in the Minnesota census (Pembina
District) and 1860-1880 in the "Dakotat Territory" census.

have an index to the S Dakota 1885
and 1895
state census if you are a member or visit your local family history
library.
- Tennessee - No state census. The FamilySearch
Research Outline to Tennessee gives an overview that includes
a section on Tennessee census substitutes.
- Texas - various between 1792 - 1836 The FamilySearch
Research Outline to Texas gives an overview.
- Utah - if they were LDS church
census 1914 - 1960 have been filmed.
- Vermont
- Virginia
- Washington - territorial censuses were taken in
various counties between 1857-1892. Some early territorial census
have been put online at the
Washington Digital Archives site. The Family
History Library in East Wenatchee has many Wash. territorial censuses
on film (but not indexed). The Wenatchee Area Genealogical Society
has parts of it in book form.
- West Virginia - remember that your pre-civil war
West Virginia ancestor is found in Virginia records.
- Wisconsin - an online index to the 1836
territorial census of Wisconsin has been submitted to Rootsweb
- Wyoming
