2006, 2007 Eastern Region Champions

2008 Eastern Region Champions

The 2008 Knights went 11-1 to finish the season and capture their 3rd straight Eastern Region Title.  Under sunny skies, the Knights defeated Yakima 6-0 and 4-1 securing first place and a number one seed to next weeks NWAACC Championship Tournament.

The Knights wasted little time getting on the board against the Yaks.  A first inning single by Ranzy York got things going.  Miranda Rosebrook drove in York with a double to left center and would score on Rachael Glaspie’s double in the gap.  Ashley Gustin knocked Glaspie in with a single up the middle and the team would have all the runs they needed.  In all the Knights hammered out 15 hits in game one and the defense played error free behind the two hit pitching performance of Ranzy York.

Game two was a little tighter contest, but the Knights would not be denied in their quest to win the league. Ashley Gustin hit a big 2 out double in the 4th inning and pinch runner Leslie Quay would score on a pinch hit single by Melanie Mobley as the Knights added on to a one run lead.  Singles by Kalena Keffler, Miranda Rosebrook and Rachael Glaspie got the team 2 more runs in the 5th and six outs later they had their third straight regional title.

Next up for the Knights is a trip to Portland for the NWAACC Championship Tournament.  First game is 9 am against Chemeketa.

Big weekend for the Knights produces great results…

Coming off a Cross-Over Tournament weekend that saw the team go 3-1, with victories over Highline, Southwest Oregon and Chemeketa; the Knights were a confident bunch facing Columbia Basin and Walla Walla this past weekend.

The team wasted no time Friday in putting runs on the board.  Miranda Rosebrook doubled in the bottom of the first inning and scored on Laurel Wyatt’s single to plate the first of 15 eventual runs in the five inning game.  Ashley Gustin hit her third home run of the year to lead off the second inning and would end the second game with a three run shot to invoke the mercy rule by a score of 12-2.  The pitching was tough as Ranzy York and Bri Compton both won games, the defense was solid, only committing one error on the day and we ran the bases with aggression and confidence, stealing eleven bases combined.  All of that lead into the rematch we had been waiting for with the team that came into Saturday’s game in first place in the East, the Walla Walla Warriors.

The sun was finally shining, the stands were packed and two of the NWAACC’s best teams went toe to toe for 14 innings of great softball.  Game 1 was a battle of last season’s top pitchers, Breanne Jones and Ranzy York.  York set the tone for her team early on.  In the top of the second inning, back to back errors by the Knights put runners at 1st and 2nd with no outs.  Unfazed by what was going on around her, York struck out the next three batters and kept her team in a tight ball game.  The game was filled with great plays on both sides and wasn’t decided until the sixth inning.  With one out in the bottom of the 6th Kalena Keffler singled up the middle and would steal second base, only to be tagged out after over sliding the bag on what Keffler would describe as the Knights “ridiculously fast” infield dirt.  It looked to be another of a number of crucial plays in the game until Miranda Rosebrook and Laurel Wyatt combined to change everything.  Rosebrook doubled off the left field wall on the very next pitch and Laurel Wyatt would drive home the winning run on a two strike change up that she fought off for a base hit up the middle.  The Warrior’s did not go quietly in the 7th.  A bloop hit and an error by the Knights put runners on first and third base with two outs before York got lead-off hitter Sharee Fitzgerald to ground out to Jocelyn Slack at third base to end the game.  York finished game one giving up only 5 hits while striking out six.  Coach Pflugrath was so impressed she decided to start York in game 2 and the Ace did not disappoint.

Building on the momentum of game one, the Knights scored early in the second game.  Miranda Rosebrook was again the rally starter with a one out single.  She advanced to second on a ground out to second base by Wyatt and would score on a base hit to left by Rachael Glaspie for an early 1-0 lead.  Both pitchers’s kept the offense at bay until the 5th inning.  Miranda Rosebrook led off the 5th with a single and would steal 2nd base.  Rachael Glaspie walked and Rosebrook moved to 3rd base on an attempted pick off that got away.  Ranzy York stepped to the plate and laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to score Rosebrook and move Glaspie to 3rd base.  Katy Lafferty came in to pinch run for Glaspie and would score the very important third run of the game on a deep sac fly to left by Ashley Gustin.  The Warrior’s didn’t wait long to respond scoring their one run of the day in the top of the sixth.  Katie Brown reached on a fielding error and Liz Homer followed with the only extra base hit of the day for the Warriors a double to left to put runners at 2nd and 3rd with no outs.  Ranzy York again came up big striking out Becky Jones on a picture perfect change up for the first out of the inning.  Bre Jones single up the middle to score Brown and move Homer to third and it looked like the visitors were in business… until Miranda Rosebrook again made her presence felt.  A line drive out to center field turned into an inning ending double play as Rosebrook uncorked a laser from center to throw Homer out at the plate by ten feet.  It was a great day of softball…and moved the Knights back into first place in the Eastern Region with six games to go.

This coming weekend is the longest trip of the year starting Friday with key match ups against Blue Mountain and then the long trip to Ontario, Oregon to face Treasure Valley.  The regular season concludes at home on Saturday May 10th against Yakima…don’t miss your last chance to get out and see this great team play!

28-6 and 14-4 heading into the Cross-Over Tournament…

10 games in 8 days saw the Knights come away with an 8-2 record and much to build on heading into the home stretch of the 2008 season.

Four of those wins came at home against Blue Mountain and Treasure Valley.  The Timberwolves traveled to Wenatchee in a tie for second place.  Ranzy York pitched a shut out in game one and doubles by Ashley Gustin and Katrina Plucker in the 4th inning provided enough runs for the 4-0 victory.  The Timberwolves opened up game 2 scoring 2 runs of starter Bri Compton but the Knights wasted no time in responding.  Kalena Keffler led off with a single taking second base when the left fielder bobbled the ball.  Miranda Rosebrook drew a walk and Laurel Wyatt singled to load the bases.  Ranzy York’s ground out to third base scored one run and the Knights took the lead on a two out single up the middle by Ashley Gustin.  Compton would settle down to shut Blue Mountain out through the next six innings.

Against Treasure Valley the Knights would put up 22 runs while collecting 23 hits to complete the perfect 4-0 weekend.

A busy week of travel started in Yakima.  Shaky defense in the first two innings saw the Knights fall behind 2-0 after three innings of play, and then the offense finally got going.  Kalena Keffler led off the 4th inning with a triple to right center.  Miranda Rosebrook singled scoring Keffler.  Laurel Wyatt was on after a single of her own when Ashley Gustin doubled up the middle to give the Knights a lead.  Haley Pitts followed with a double of her own and the Knights held on for a 6-4 victory.  Game 2 was a 9-3 victory powered by the home run swings of Laurel Wyatt, Ranzy York and Rachael Glaspie.  Glaspie and Bri Compton combined pitching efforts limited the Yaks to only 3 runs on 7 hits.

After a few days at home for practice, we loaded Knight Rider for another road trip, this time to Spokane and Big Bend.  The Knights were out hit in the first game losing 5-1 and let one slip away in the second game surrendering a 2 run lead in the bottom of the 7th.

As is the case with any great team, the Knights rebounded in a big way defeating Big Bend 22-1 and

11-2, both games shortened to 5 innings.  These wins were total team efforts as evident by the 40 hits we collected on the day.  Kaemyn Meagher and Leslie Quay both picked up their first pinch hits of the season and Kayleigh Fisk was outstanding in the circle, pitching 3 innings of no hit ball in the first game.

The next six games are all non-league contests starting Tuesday against North Idaho College, a team that played in the national title game a year ago.  We will use this time to make individual improvements and push our selves to be the best TEAM we can be heading into the final weeks of our season.

6-2 to start Eastern Region play…

The battle has begun.  Only two weeks into the league season and the East is shaping up to be a tough battle between some very good teams.

The first weekend of conference play and the Knights won all 4 games, including two very competitive games against Spokane.  In game one Ranzy York gave up only 3 runs and the defense was solid, committing no errors, in a 5-3 victory.  Kalena Keffler, Ranzy York, and Ashley Gustin went a combined 6-10 at the plate to lead the offense.  In game two the bats wasted no time in giving starting pitcher Bri Compton run support.  The 5 runs scored in the first inning would be more than enough as the Knights cruised to a 6-3 win.  In that first inning Miranda Rosebrook and Rachael Glaspie had single, Laurel Wyatt hit a two run double and Ranzy York would drive two more in with her second triple of the year.

Saturday was another solid day for the team, two victories over Big Bend by scores of 8-0 and 9-0.  The defense again played error free, we swung the bats aggressively and ran the bases like mad women.

Our first road trip of the conference season took us to Columbia Basin and Walla Walla, two tournament teams from a year ago.  Snow fell and the wind blew all weekend but the team played 4 good games, winning twice at CBC before dropping a pair of close games to WWCC.  Every Knight had at least one hit in the first game against CBC, led by Kalena Keffler who was 3-6 with 3 runs scored and two more driven in.  Big innings in both games led to 17-6 and 19-4 victories.  The Knights hit 6 home runs on the day, 2 each by Ranzy York and Laurel Wyatt and 1 a piece from Rachael Glaspie and Ashley Gustin.

Saturday we traveled to Walla Walla to face last year’s second place team.  Both teams played solid but unfortunately for us we came out on the losing end of both games by scores of 3-5 and 4-6.  Untimely mistakes in the field and on the bases, coupled with the inability to get a big hit in big situations, contributed to both loses.

The losses Saturday stopped a 15 game win streak for the Knights and will fuel our fire as we continue Eastern Region play.  The 20-2 start to the season ties an all-time school record set in 1985…a very impressive milestone.

This weekend the Knights will host Blue Mountain on Friday before taking on the Chukars of Treasure Valley Saturday…hope to see you at the park.
