Business Information Technology Courses
BIT 100 2 credits Basic Computer Keyboarding For students with little or no keyboarding experience and not majoring in business information technology. Basic computer operations. Alphabet, number and symbol keyboarding. Emphasis on techniques, accuracy, speed development and basic reports.
BIT 101 5 credits Beginning Keyboarding/Formatting For students with little or no keyboarding experience who wish to learn touch keyboarding for business applications, including the numeric keypad. Basic computer operations; emphasis on touch keyboarding accuracy and speed; development of proofreading skills; basic formatting of business documents-memos, letters, reports and tables.
BIT 102 5 credits Customer Service Students develop skills for providing superior customer service in person and on the telephone. Specific techniques are covered that emphasize improved communications and problem-solving skills.
BIT 103 1 credit Computer Hardware Overview Introductory exploration of computer hardware – what is in the box? Includes discussion of relationships between processor speed, memory and hard drive space as well as current storage options. This course provides the basic information to make a computer purchase decision. Part 1 of BIT 105 equivalency. Prerequisites: BIT 101 (or instructor’s signature).
BIT 104 1 credit Operating Systems Overview Use the basic functions in Windows to display files and computer status information, organize drives, files or folders efficiently, use the help function and locate information. Discussions will include variations found on Mac and Linux systems as well as expectations for new systems. Part 2 of BIT 105 equivalency. Prerequisites: BIT 101 and BIT 103 (or instructor’s signature).
BIT 105 5 credits Computer Applications This survey course introduces the operation and basic applications of microcomputers using Windows software. Basic concepts of hardware, software, operating systems, the Internet, word processing, spreadsheets and database applications are included. Prerequisite: BIT 101 or equivalent for BIT majors; BIT 100 or equivalent for non-majors, or instructor’s signature.
BIT 106 1 credit Getting Started with Word Processing Use basic Word functions to enter, edit, cut, copy, paste and reorganize text. Documents will be enhanced with graphics and tables. Will use Word tools including spell checker, grammar checker, page layout, and references. Flyers, letters, template resumes and research papers will be produced. Part 3 of BIT 105 equivalency. Prerequisites: BIT 101 and BIT 104 (or instructor’s signature).
BIT 107 1 credit Getting Started with Spreadsheets Use basic Excel functions to enter, edit, cut, copy, paste and reorganize text and data and create simple formula. Spreadsheets will be enhanced with formatting and charts. Part 4 of BIT 105 equivalency. Prerequisite: BIT 101 and BIT 106 (or instructor’s signature).
BIT 108 1 credit Getting Started with Database Use Microsoft Access to create a database and add basic elements such as tables, queries, forms and reports. Examine the features of built in wizards. Part 5 of BIT 105 equivalency. Prerequisites: BIT 101 and BIT 107 (or instructor’s signature).
BIT 109 5 credits Business Math Applied mathematics in taxes, interest, annuities, promissory notes, discounting, credit, mortgage loans, insurance, cash discounts, markup and markdown, exchange rates, statistics, and use of a business calculator. Prerequisites: MATH 097, or equivalent.
BIT 110 5 credits Word Processing I Uses a full-featured Windows word processing program to create attractive and professional-looking documents. Basic to advanced document creation, editing and formatting used to apply document-processing skills for employment and personal use. Emphasis on communication skills, critical thinking and teamwork. May be repeated with different software. Prerequisites: BIT 101, 105 or equivalent.
BIT 111 5 credits Business English Designed to improve English-usage skills in business, including sentence structure, spelling, grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, editing, proofreading and use of reference materials. Prerequisite: appropriate assessment score or successful completion of ENGL 097.
BIT 112 1 credit Getting Started with Presentation Graphics Use PowerPoint to create and view presentations. Enhance the presentation with pictures, shapes, SmartArt, tables and charts. Apply transitions. Part 5 of BIT 105 equivalency. Prerequisites: BIT 101 and BIT 106 (or instructor’s signature).
BIT 115 2 credits Résumé and Interview Designed to promote student success in obtaining employment. Includes preparation of job search documents and participation in individual and group interviews. Prerequisite: highly recommended that students enrolling in this class have basic computer and word-processing skills.
BIT 116 3 credits Professional Work Relations Study of technical and interpersonal skills desired in today’s service-oriented, global economy, including leadership, teamwork, employers’ expectations and self-development. The focus is on human relations skills, problems and issues.
BIT 117 3 credits Presentation Graphics Use Windows presentation graphics software to create, present and collaborate on presentations; use enhanced multimedia capabilities to deliver presentations with more impact; search reference materials, Internet services and other sources while working in presentation graphics software. Opportunity to master skill sets and activities necessary for Microsoft certification. May be repeated with different software. Prerequisites: BIT 105 or instructor’s signature.
BIT 118 2 credits Microsoft Office Outlook Use Microsoft Office Outlook to store, track, and organize business and personal information. Includes managing e-mail, calendar, tasks, notes, address book, message templates, mail merge, help, customizing Outlook and Web/Outlook integration. Covers skills necessary for Microsoft certification. May be repeated with different software. Prerequisites: BIT 105 or instructor’s signature.
BIT 120 5 credits Spreadsheets I A Windows spreadsheet program is used to organize and analyze data, perform numerical calculations, and illustrate relationships in numerical data with charts. Formulas, functions, graphics, 3-D References, auditing tools, consolidating and linking workbooks, and what-if analysis features are applied to business situations. May be repeated with different software. Prerequisites: MATH 097, BIT 105 or equivalent.
BIT 125 2 credits Internet Basics Introduction to Internet basics, including use of the major Internet browsers. Discover how to search for specialized databases, resources and libraries. Look at current trends, various browsers, RSS and blogs. Prerequisites: BIT 105 or instructor’s signature.
BIT 170 1 credit Keyboarding Skill Development Intensive keyboarding speed and accuracy building. May be repeated for credit. Pass/fail grade. Less than a full quarter. Intended for students with previous keyboarding experience. Prerequisites: BIT 100 or 101 or equivalent.
BIT 171 2 credits Basic Filing Principles of filing for the alphabetic, numeric, subject and geographic methods.
BIT 172 4 credits Machine Transcription Production of transcripts of business letters, forms, memoranda, manuscripts and tabulations with emphasis on mailable copy. Prerequisite: BIT 101 or equivalent, and 111 or equivalent.
BIT 173 4 credits Medical Transcription Continued development of skill in machine transcription and review of medical terminology. Study of medical transcription course materials and preparation of various medical reports. Prerequisites: BIT 110 or equivalent, BIT 172 or equivalent, HLTH 123 or equivalent.
BIT 174 4 credits Legal Transcription Continued development of machine transcription skills with legal emphasis. Development of a comprehensive legal vocabulary and increased knowledge of legal practices. Prerequisites: BIT 105, 111, 172.
BIT 175 3 credits Legal Formatting Practice in formatting legal documents correctly and efficiently with emphasis on legal terminology and correct document layout. Prerequisites: BIT 110 (or equivalent), 174 (or equivalent), 108 or 204 (or equivalent).
BIT 200 5 credits Operating Systems Computer hardware and software concepts and fundamentals of Windows operating system are studied in depth. Use Windows desktop, Start menu, and file system to start Windows, run programs, organize files, and for system customization and maintenance. Windows Aero, Sidebar, Mail, Search, Photo Gallery, Mobility Center, Defender, Command Prompt are included. May be repeated with different software. Prerequisites: BIT 105 (or equivalent)
BIT 202 5 credits Computerized Accounting Comprehensive study of computerized accounting systems in both service and merchandising environments. Realistic business simulations are analyzed by using a variety of companies and projects. Commercial Windows accounting software demonstrates the use of fully integrated accounting systems. Students will set up a computerized system for manual conversion. May be repeated with different software. Prerequisites: BIT 105, ACCT 103 or equivalent. (ACCT 103 may be taken concurrently.)
BIT 205 5 credits Database I A relational DBMS is used to create, modify, retrieve, sort, query, create relationships, and link and import data in business databases. Professional-looking reports/sub-reports, forms/sub-forms, advanced queries, macros, modules will be created. Opportunity to master skill sets and activities necessary for Microsoft certification. May be repeated with different software. Prerequisites: BIT 105, MATH 97 (or instructor’s signature).
BIT 210 5 credits Word Processing II Advanced instruction in the theories and technical skills of word processing; integrative learning is emphasized. Students will master advanced features and commands. Opportunity to master skill sets and activities necessary for the Microsoft Certified Application Specialist (MCAS) certification. May be repeated with different software. Prerequisite: BIT 110 or instructor’s signature.
BIT 212 5 credits Business Communications The study and preparation of the form and content of written and oral business messages. Includes analysis of written business letters, memos and reports for appearance, clarity and impact; includes a research paper. Prerequisites: BIT 111 or ENGL 101 (BIT 111 preferred) and keyboarding skills.
BIT 215 5 credits Database II Advanced instruction in the theories and technical skills of database management systems; integrative learning is emphasized. Students will build relational databases and master advanced features and commands including VBA. May be repeated with different software. Prerequisite: BIT 205 or equivalent.
BIT 220 5 credits Spreadsheets II Create, format and audit workbooks at an advanced level using database functions, macros, templates, Web tools, multiple workbooks, workgroups, imported/exported data, data tables, scenario management, Solver and VBA. Opportunity to master skill sets and activities necessary for Microsoft certification. May be repeated with different software. Prerequisites: BIT 120 or instructor’s signature.
BIT 225 3 credits Publishing on the Web Logic and design for beginning Web page designers. Provides all the information necessary to plan effective, attractive Web pages in a minimum amount of time. Included are helpful Web tips on how to design Web presentations, what information is best presented and how to make professional-looking Web pages. May be repeated with different software. Prerequisites: BIT 125 or instructor’s signature.
BIT 250 5 credits Desktop Publishing General desktop publishing concepts, including basic typography, publication symbols and classic design concepts, will be applied to plan and create a variety of small single- and multiple-page publications including flyers, brochures, newsletters, Web forms, resumes and merged documents. Representational portfolios will be developed for employment purposes. May be repeated with different software. Prerequisite: BIT 110 or instructor’s signature.
BIT 251 5 credits Adobe Illustrator Industry-standard computer illustration software will be used to produce graphic designs for business and artistic applications. Creative design strategies, arrangement of graphic elements and effective use of typography will be incorporated into print, Web and multimedia presentations. May be repeated with different software. Prerequisites: BIT 105 or instructor’s signature.
BIT 252 5 credits Adobe Photoshop Transform simple snapshots into works of art through software manipulation such as cropping, color management and re-touching. Create dramatic special effects. Transport images from camera and scanners to printed photos ready for a frame. Prerequisites: BIT 105 or instructor’s signature.
BIT 296 1-5 credits Work Experience Designed to provide students with on-the-job practical field experience. One credit for each five hours of work experience per week. Prerequisite: instructor’s signature.
