About the Program

Student mentors provide assigned students with information about services offered by multicultural affairs and other student and college programs, encouraging students to use those services to their advantage. Student mentors also model cross-cultural communication, cooperation, understanding and interaction. Other goals of the program include:

  • Assisting Latino students in understanding the purpose of higher education and the importance of continuing their education at a four-year university.
  • Assisting students in developing an identity and a relationship with their peers, the college, the college staff, and the community.
  • Helping students understand the costs of attending college, in terms of both dollars and personal commitment.
  • Improving the success rate of new students.
  • Providing an atmosphere and sufficient information to enable students to make well-reasoned and well-informed choices.
  • Helping provide access to information concerning academic policies, procedures and programs.
  • Promoting awareness of opportunities outside the classroom.
  • Helping to develop familiarity with the campus.
  • Helping to create an atmosphere that minimizes anxiety, promotes positive attitudes and stimulates an environment for learning.
