WHAT DO WE WANT FROM OUR GENEALOGY SOFTWARE?

IT SHOULD BE GEDCOM Compatible

IT SHOULD BE EASY to practice good genealogy habits – sourcing, documentation, notes, all the details

IT SHOULD BE EASY to share – not just GEDCOM but does it have a way to share the data with people who don’t have genealogy software like family members who would just like the record?

IT SHOULD BE EASY to add scanned photos and documents

IT SHOULD PRINT clear, attractive pedigree charts and groupsheets

IT SHOULD PRINT great reports that help you view your data in multiple ways

 

 
       
       



RECOMMENDATIONS FOR DOWNLOADING GEDCOMS FROM ONLINE SITES

 

Don’t bring anything into your main file.   Keep it in its own file or keep a conglomerate gedcom (ie TYLERstuff).  Keep you main research file under tight control and add carefully to it.

If you have a program like RootsMagic you can then bring individual entries over anytime you want.  You will be able to add specific people who are new to your file or people that you might like to merge with your entry.

Source the import: Look carefully at the pull down menu of your genealogy program when you import the file in and tell your genealogy program to source it meaning that the entries you pull in will say "Ancestral File" or "IGI" etc. so that if you bring these entries into your research file you know where you got them.
