And Don’t Forget to Write…

Genealogy Societies

Check Society Hill
which is a directory to Genealogical and Historical Societies.

If you don’t have any luck try a Google Search with something like Wenatchee Genealogical Society as a search term

Libraries

Go to Switchboard.com
Do a Business Search
Under Business Name/Category put Libraries
enter the city and state
make certain the “include surrounding areas” box is checked and choose the mile range you want (the default is within 10 miles)

Once you get the name of the libraries search for them by name in Google to find websites (if they have one) and see what their policies are. Do they advertise that they will NOT do online reference? Do they have an online catalog? Do they have a genealogy section on their web page? Is there a contact person you can email for more information?

When you contact libraries ask specific questions like "can you tell me how I would find an obituary for Jonathan Simmons who died in Clarksville 3 Jun 1894? As opposed to "can you find obituarys for any Simmons who died in Clarksville?"

Archives & Historical Libraries & State Libraries
Search
Google with terms like :
Maryland Archives
Washington Digital Archives
Oregon State Library (in quotes)
Virginia History Library
Illinois Historical Library

Court Houses
Court House Directory from Genealogy.com

Vital Records
Get current forms to order vital records
For funeral homes go to FuneralNet

Look-Up Volunteers
go to
Google– search by putting terms like Kansas Genealogy Lookups
Don’t get discouraged if some requests aren’t answered – people are volunteers and sometimes they get too busy, sometimes they get disorganized and sometimes they go the extra miles for you. Keep trying.
