COMPREHENSIVE:

  • American Memory  [Library of Congress]
  • David Rumsey Map Collection has beautiful historical maps. You probably do not want to use them on a dial-up connection (too long to load) and the site is a bit difficult to navigate but worth the effort.
  • Digital Book Index - free books  online
  • Heritage West   (collaboration of archives, historical societies, museums combining digital collections from Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, Nevade, New Mexico, Texas, Utah & Wyoming)
  • Making of America Project - a collection of early history digitized and available online - housed at the University of Michigan this site has materials from all over early America -    books on local history, military history,  - even some New York wills!  It is full of treasures if you have the patience to browse the collection.
