How
Books Are Shelved
NONFICTION BOOKS and VIDEOS are shelved by the DEWEY DECIMAL
CLASSIFICATION system. The call number on the spine of the book/video
is a decimal number signifying a particular subject area, so when
the books/videos are arranged in numerical order, they are also
arranged by subject. The fiction and biographies are shelved alphabetically
by the surname of the author or person.
Reference
REFERENCE MATERIALS contain topic summaries or overviews,
terminology and specific facts that can be used to develop term
papers, speeches, essays, or to satisfy your curiosity. A few of
the common types of reference materials are encyclopedias, almanacs,
dictionaries, atlases, and handbooks. Reference books are located
on the main floor by the north window wall. Reference databases
are accessed on the library web page under Reference. The
Reference Librarian can help in finding the right books, articles
and Web sites. Ask for assistance at the Reference Desk or email
Barbara Oldham at
boldham@wvc.edu
