FamilySearch / Family History Center News

FamilySearch Record Search has been recently updated but I still recommend you use
Record Search Pilot  (their earlier platform) because it works much better.
Occasionally it will insist you go to the new version and sign in (you have to register but its free)
to see a particular image but for most searching stay in the Pilot for best results

List of current indexing projects

We will soon be able to order film ONLINE by using a PayPal account. It will still come to the local family history library for you to read it there but you can decide what you want at home using the catalog and don't have to show up till it arrives.

Ancestry News
Ancestry has GREATLY improved their New Search page so those of you who use their OLD SEARCH may want to use it at least some of the time.

Ancestry has begun its own volunteer indexing project and the records that are being indexed this way are free.  You must register with Ancestry for a free account to use them but a sizable group of databases are now open to all.

How to find ALL the free content
Under the Search Tab choose CARD CATALOG
Under keyword type FREE
You will see hundreds of databases you may access without paying for a subscription

to narrow your search stay in the card catalog and type terms WITH free i.e.
California free
Marriages free
Germany free

Also remember that all family trees can be viewed on Ancestry without a subscription and you can BUILD a family tree online or upload a gedcom with simple registration that doesn't cost anything.  Since Ancestry is the largest genealogy site on the web this is a great way to connect to others working on your family and you only need to upload as much as you want.  You can build a tree with just one groupsheet if that is what you want to do but it might pay off later when someone contacts you!

Newspapers are the big news on the web.  Historical newspapers are everywhere but finding them can be a challenge.
