Nicole Shermer and Bill Taft, 2014 All-Washington Academic Team
Wenatchee Valley College student Nicole Shermer and WVC at Omak student Bill Taft were recently named to the All-Washington Academic Team and were recognized at a ceremony in Olympia.
Shermer is president of the WVC club ONE, which is affiliated with an organization that fights against extreme poverty and preventable disease. She also works as a ski instructor at Mission Ridge Ski and Board Resort and as a WriteLab tutor at the college. Shermer is a Running Start student and is working on an associate of arts and sciences transfer degree at WVC. She plans to pursue a major in international studies and study abroad or complete an internship in a foreign country, with a career goal of becoming a foreign service officer.
Taft is a full-time father, cyber operations technician and staff sergeant in the Air National Guard, and medical transcriptionist at Mid Valley Hospital in Omak. Currently working on an associate in technical science degree in industrial technology-aerospace electronics, he plans to pursue a bachelor's degree in information technology and administrative management at Central Washington University, with the goal of starting his own business or working with a company where he can use his training to make a difference.
In an address to the students during the ceremony, Lieutenant Governor Brad Owens stated, "The 68 of you who make up the All-Washington Team were chosen because you reflect the diversity of our state, maintain the highest standards of excellence, and contribute positively to your communities."
The program, which recognizes and honors two-year college students for their scholastic achievement and community and college service, is sponsored by the Washington Association of Community and Technical Colleges, the Trustees Association of Community and Technical Colleges, the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges and Phi Theta Kappa. Scholarship sponsors include KeyBank of Washington and the Washington State Employees Credit Union.
