Associate of Fine Arts: Music

At most institutions that offer a degree in music, students are required to take six consecutive terms of music theory, ear training, ensemble participation and private lessons on their main instrument, including voice. Non-piano/pipe-organ majors are required to develop proficiency at keyboard. At WVC, music students should enroll in the following courses to ensure a smooth transfer to other state institutions. In addition, students must earn 19-25 credits of approved electives (including Music 101) to complete their degree.

AFA in Music
Students who complete the AFA in Music will be able to:

  • Transfer to a four-year university in Washington and enter a music degree program
  • Understand music theory, including music fundamentals, analysis techniques, and composition techniques
  • Demonstrate sight-singing and music transcription skills
  • Show proficiency in an instrument or voice, including musical skills, audition and performance techniques, and literature and pedagogical knowledge specific to the specialty area
  • Demonstrate mastery of fundamental keyboard skills
  • Through ensemble experiences, develop rehearsal and performance skills and knowledge of instrumental or choral literature
  • Develop knowledge and skill in electronic publishing, digital recording and digital post-production techniques
  • Understand Western European music history or jazz history
