Pianist Dylan Marney performs at WVC June 8
Pianist Dylan Marney will perform at Wenatchee Valley College at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 8, in The Grove Recital Hall, Music and Art Center, on the Wenatchee campus. This event is open to the public. Admission is by donation, with proceeds going toward the WVC Music Excellence Scholarship Fund.
This recital will be recorded; therefore, children age 10 and under will not be admitted.
Marney will perform Sergie Prokofiev's "Sonata No. 6, Op. 82" and the world premiere of WVC Music Director Juel Iwaasa's piano sonata "Homage: Beethoven, Brahms and Bartok."
"This program stylistically spans roughly 200 years of evolving approaches to music and piano playing," Marney said. "Iwaasa's 'Homage' sonata moves from the clarity of early Classicism to the lyricism of Romanticism and finally to the chromaticism of early Modernism through its three movements, all within the wonderful touches of a contemporary composer. Prokofiev's 'Sonata No. 6, Op. 82' is a staple of the twentieth century repertoire, an epic and volatile work known both for its energetic muscularity and heartbreaking tenderness."
Marney frequently performs as a solo pianist and has received first place in the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Steinway & Sons Young Artist Piano Competition for Washington State. He is a doctoral of musical arts candidate from the University of Arizona, where he is majoring in piano performance with a minor in music theory under Dr. John Milbauer. He received both his bachelor and master of music degrees in piano performance at Central Washington University, and also has a master of science in music technology from the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) School of Music. Marney currently works for Tucson Unified School District as a teaching artist for the Opening Minds through the Arts program.
The WVC Music Excellence Scholarship Fund was established to provide financial assistance to students that show promise and wish to take private music lessons in order to enhance their musical performance skills for the purpose of auditioning for entrance into transfer institutions.
