Revit Workshops

The intended audience is for anyone who uses Revit. I mean that: anyone. Professionals, particularly entire businesses, may find the most immediate benefit from my lessons because they can put them into practice straightaway. That said, many businesses have their established ways of doing their work, so students, from high school into college, will have a hefty and powerful skillset in their back pocket after taking my workshops. This will help them when they steadily rise into positions of management. Also hobbyists and others who don't use Revit for a day job will find this helpful as well. Let’s improve the workflow of a whole generation of architects, engineers and construction professionals!

Learning how to create different types of Revit Families. Families are the individual objects of which a project is comprised. This workshop will focus on what are known as “loadable” Families, meaning those Families which exist as separate files outside of the project file (i.e. the building file). It may be easier to say what are not loadable Families, but are rather called “system” Families: the most common are walls, floors, roofs, ceilings, stairs and ramps. We will not focus on these primarily, only peripherally as they relate to loadable Families.

Every project has a starting point, but some starting points are further ahead than others. In this lesson we will explore an overview of the crucial pieces to such an advanced starting point, and will journey through some examples of which tools are key to use for preliminary designs, and how to harvest data important to the early stages of designing a building.

Spend a weekend sharply honing your skill with the architecture and construction industry’s most widely-used software! This class is taught by a licensed architect who has dedicated countless hours to finding out how to get the most out of Autodesk Revit. Anyone who uses Revit will benefit from this two-day workshop, and registration is available for either one or both days.

On the first day we will cover the art and science of creating expert-level Revit Family files. On the second day we will go over how to set up a project to expertly wield data in early design phases. All this will be taught through the lens of real, modern architecture and construction business, where profit, data and repeatability are paramount along with skilled design.

If you work in Revit regularly, whether a beginner or a seasoned user of the software, this workshop will greatly boost your proficiency!

You will leave with two benefits, one short-term and one long-term. For short-term, you will have learned how to effectively make user-friendly parametric Revit families which you can use in your Revit project files. For long-term, you will see how these families fit into a grand scheme of how to use BIM-styled software, such as Revit, to maximize the efficiency and depth of your business’s or organization’s projects.

Not officially, but broadly speaking, maybe. The lessons do not provide AIA Learning Units (LU’s). As for state professional development requirements, some states, including Washington State, use a broad approach to continuing education, so this may be an eligible entry for such requirements. Check with your state’s licensing department to confirm this before listing it as a professional development activity. Also, registered professionals should keep any emails confirming your registration for this workshop as proof of your attendance (in case you are audited by the DOL).

Even in this post-COVID-19 era, the benefits of learning in-person are many. I am taking this approach particularly because I want to have as much interaction as possible, which will help the participants to leave with as much increased knowledge and skills as possible. That said, this workshop is also a great case of “you reap what you sow.” To get the most out of this workshop, participants will need to speak up, ask questions, and interact with the instructor and each other.

Since this is an in-person event, there is limited space in the room. Also, I want to give proper attention to the questions and interactions of each participant, and giving such attention to a large number of people would make this workshop last longer than the allotted time allows.

Think of the idiom “you can’t see the forest for the trees.” This is both a good way to understand the distinctions of ways to use Revit, and a way to show the benefits of a BIM Mindset. The trees are the individual actions done in Revit: with Revit, think of making an individual Family file. This alone allows a person to do some work in a Revit project. However, the ability to “see the forest,” meaning thinking of both an entire Revit project with all its parts, and future Revit projects, brings many more benefits which ultimately have the potential to increase work efficiency and profits. Seeing the forest—having a BIM Mindset—allows you to use more fully the power which Revit offers.
