Martha Flores has been appointed to a five-year term on the Wenatchee Valley College Board of Trustees by Washington State Governor Jay Inslee. Flores replaces outgoing trustee Jim Tiffany, who served two terms on the board.

"I'm proud to be a former community college student, a former college teacher and now a WVC board member," said Flores. "I love community colleges. They are the engines within communities to help train students for jobs and further education. They are open to all."

Flores was born in Guatemala and moved to El Salvador before moving with her family to California when she was 15. After graduating from high school, she attended El Camino College, a community college in Torrance, Calif., and then California State University Los Angeles.

She served as a mental health counselor in California and in the Wenatchee Valley before retiring. Flores also taught art at the Wenatchee Valley Museum and Cultural Center, Icicle Arts in Leavenworth, Two Rivers Gallery and the Cashmere Art Center. She taught both art and Spanish at WVC.

"It's infectious to be around young people and see them looking toward their futures," she said.

She also volunteers at the Bruce Transitional Housing and serves on the Wenatchee Arts Commission.
