The Wenatchee Valley College Chamber Choir will present a winter concert on Thursday, Dec. 12, at 7 p.m. in The Grove Recital Hall in the Music and Art Center on the Wenatchee campus.

The concert will feature the WVC Chamber Choir, directed by Juel Iwaasa, the Jazz Combo, directed by Skyler Garcia, and alumni choir soloists.

The performance will include the premier of two pieces by Juel Iwaasa. "All Creatures" is an arrangement of the grand hymn "All Creatures of Our God and King," composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams, using words written by St. Francis of Assisi (with text translated into English by William Draper). This piece was written in the Baroque cantata style of J.S. Bach, juxtaposing sections of the hymn with instrumental sections that feature new melodies. This performance features choir member Tristan Thompson, Iwaasa on trumpet, and Justin Apple on piano.

The second piece, "When I Consider," is a modern choral setting of a passage from Job (Chapter 23:11-15). The music makes use of text painting, creating sounds that are evocative of the emotional text. In addition to modern harmonies and effects, sections using exotic scales and chant-like textures allude to the music culture of the biblical Middle East.

The suggested donation for admission is $5 for an individual and $10 for a family.
