Dr. Donahue is the author of Salmon Eaters to Sagebrushers: Washington's Lost Literary Legacy (Washington State University Press, 2019); a trilogy of short novels, Three Sides Water (Ooligan Press, 2018); the novels Clara and Merritt (Wordcraft of Oregon, 2010) and Madison House (Hawthorne Books, 2005); and the short story collection The Cornelius Arms (Missing Spoke Press, 2000). Madison House was the winner of the Languam Prize for American Historical Fiction.

He co-edited the anthologies Reading Seattle: The City in Prose (2004) and Reading Portland: The City in Prose (2007). He and co-author Sheela McLean published an abridged and annotated version of Seven Years on the Pacific Slope

His short stories and articles on American literature have appeared in several literary journals and scholarly periodicals.

He has taught English at Wenatchee Valley College at Omak since 2010. Prior to teaching at WVC, he taught English at Sam Houston State University and Birmingham-Southern College.
