Professional Judgement

Professional Judgement is the term referring to the authority under which Financial Aid Administrators may modify FAFSA data elements or change a student's dependency status. There are multiple processes under the "Professional Judgement" umbrella that aim to account for extenuating circumstances happening for the student, or their family, that are not properly reflected in the FAFSA/WASFA. Please see brief summarize of existing processes in which, on a case-by-case basis and with proper documentation, WVC's Financial Aid Office may help your aid reflect your circumstances.

This process updates a student's dependency status based on their unique situation. Examples include, but are not limited to:

  • leaving an abusive home
  • being abandoned by parent(s)
  • incarcerated parent(s)
  • being unable to contact/locate parent(s)

The FAFSA/WASFA uses income information from 2 years prior, which isn't always reflective of a student or families current situation. This process updates FAFSA/WASFA information to reflect recent financial changes, such as:

  • Job loss
  • Death in the family
  • Reducation of hours
  • Retirement
  • Large medical expenses not covered by insurance
  • Childcare expenses
  • Change in marital status (separation/divorce)
