MA to CNA Bridge
This noncredit course provides a training "bridge" for Medical Assistants with active Washington State certification* to earn a Nursing Assistant Certified credential.
Training consists of classroom learning, skills lab practice, Basic Life Support (BLS),
and clinical experience at a local, long-term care facility.
Students who successfully complete the coursework and meet instructor evaluation requirements
will take the Washington State nursing assistant skills exam on the final day of class
(first attempt included in the course). Passing the skills exam is required to pass the course. After successfully completing the course, students will be eligible to take the written
certification exam (scheduled separately).
*This program is available to individuals with an active Washington State Medical Assistant - Certified credential.
1. Complete the MA to CNA Bridge application and requirements:
- TB test
Negative blood test or at least the first step of the 2-step PPD skin tests (the second step must be completed on schedule and submitted when complete) - Hepatitis B vaccination or positive titer
- Current season flu vaccination
Fall, winter, and early spring classes
- Details and instructions for these requirements are outlined in the application.
- Completion of the two background checks will be required after registration.
- Documentation of active WA Medical Assistant - Certified credential is due no later
than 3 weeks before the start of class or at the time of registration if class start
is less than 3 weeks out.
2. Bring completed application and official documentation of all requirements to our office to register for class.
- Incomplete requirements or unofficial documentation will not be accepted.
- If requirements are incomplete registration will not be processed.
- Full payment is due at the time of registration, or submit a completed Commitment to Pay form CNA Bridge from a third party.
- Information and due dates for the DSHS background check and the Complio national background
check will be provided at time of registration.

Waitlist Process
If a class is full, students can bring in their completed paperwork (a grace period
may be extended for background checks) for review. If application and documentation
are in order, you will be added to the waitlist. If a spot becomes available we will
reach out.
- 20+ days before class starts, you will have 3 business days to submit paperwork and register
- 10-19 days before class starts, you will have 2 business days to submit paperwork and register
- Less than 10 days before class starts, you will have 24 hours (not counting weekends/holidays) to submit paperwork and register.
- Theory and skills in the classroom/lab
- Clinical experience at a local long-term care facility
- WA DOH Nursing Assistant Certified Credential application (additional fee, see Estimated Expenses below)
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- WA DOH NAC skills exam (first attempt)
*Note that attendance is mandatory for all course elements
- Minimum 80% grade for classroom portion (theory, skills, BLS) AND full attendance
- Pass clinical experience competency with skills and safety
- Pass the NAC skills exam
Upon successful completion of the course, students are eligible to take the NAC written exam. The written exam (additional cost) is administered by the testing agency Credentia. Students will receive information about this in class.
The full class fee is due at the time of registration. The CNA Bridge classes are noncredit and ineligible for financial aid. There are no payment plan options.
- Needs-based financial assistance may be available for eligible students through the WVC Student Grants Center.
Please note that applying for and securing grant funds takes time. It is recommended to begin this process as soon as possible. - Some employers may reimburse or pay for training.
Students seeking financial assistance through grants, employers, or others must secure the funding or submit a completed Commitment to Pay form CNA Bridge at the time of registration.
