Wenatchee Valley College hosts students from Misawa, Japan for summer program

The 2025 Misawa delegation walks toward the WVC Music and Art CenterThe Misawa Summer Program returns to Wenatchee Valley College this year, with 15 students and 2 chaperones from Misawa, Japan attending classes and experiencing the Wenatchee Valley through a variety of field trips. The summer program takes place from July 28 through August 7. 
“Wenatchee Valley College has hosted a summer cultural and English immersion program with students from Misawa, Japan for many years,” said WVC Dean Ellia Sablan-Zebedy, who is organizing the event. “We look forward to hosting this year’s program and continuing our relationship and cultural exchange partnership with Misawa. This is a great opportunity for students from Misawa and Wenatchee to engage and learn about one another’s culture.”  
During their 10-day visit, the Misawa students will attend ESL, geology, and art classes on WVC’s Wenatchee campus. Professor Julie Smith of the WVC Transitional Studies department will teach the ESL courses.  
The students will also take field trips to the Wenatchee Valley Museum, Pybus Market, Pangborn Monument and the Misawa Garden, Leavenworth, Rocky Reach Dam, and Chelan, as well as visiting downtown Wenatchee. They will have the opportunity to attend an AppleSox game at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium and “The Sound of Music” play in Leavenworth.  
The Wenatchee Valley Misawa Sister City Association will take part in a picnic dinner with the students on July 29 at Walla Walla Park.  
Before returning to Japan, the Misawa students will tour the University of Washington, meet with staff from the General Consulate of Japan, and visit Pike Place Market and the Pacific Science Center in Seattle. 
WVC has hosted the Misawa summer program for over 10 years.
